Sacred Covenants Our Agreement With God
We are eternal beings, children of Heavenly Parents, with the potential to become like Them. We have agency to choose to become like our Heavenly Parents, but we must exercise that agency by following the covenant path and relying on the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Because we have agency, and God will never take it away from us, and because we are like God is most respects, we covenant with Him as equals.
It has often been noted that Joseph Smith's view of God's laws was legalistic, meaning that he saw God's plan as a defined system of laws and ordinances that, if invoked, lead to eternal life. Being a lawyer, I am drawn to the legal aspects of the Plan of Salvation-agency, accountability, atonement, justice, mercy, restoration, and many other important principles. This work brings together these legal aspects of the Plan of Salvation to explain our standing with God, our potential to be like Him, and the manner of becoming like Him-by walking the covenant path. The topic is timely in light of President Russell M. Nelson's invitation to the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to keep on the covenant path.
