"From where I stood on the river bank, I could scarcely see the temple site through the trees, but I knew if I were on a boat in the river a few dozen yards from the edge that I would be able to see the temple site clearly. As an artist, I felt compelled to depict what the scene must have looked like to the departing Saints as they took their last glance at the beloved Nauvoo, I found that everywhere I looked in my mind's eye, I could see the Saints as they lived their lives, settled their beautiful city, built their temple, and then as they prepared to leave."
